We've seen these skirts all around and we are in love! We figured it would be sooo easy to create our own, especially if you already have a maxi skirt/ dress that you want to change up!
This is the "maxi" dress I decided to use. I use quotation marks because this used to be a maxi dress but it got much shorter over the years. I eventually just started folding the top part down and wearing it as a maxi skirt. Now there are holes at the bottom and I figured this skirt could really use an update. Also, when you cut into the material of this skirt, you don't have to hem it! So here we go.
You will need:
A maxi skirt/dress made out of knit jersey
Scissors
Ruler
Sharpie
Lay the bottom of the skirt flat on a table (front of skirt facing up.) Make sure there is one seam on the left and one on the right. Find the middle of the skirt at the bottom and measure about 15" up. Mark a line at the 15" mark. I just used a sharpie.
On the left side of the skirt, measure about 7" up and place a mark.
Connect the two marks on the dress. Try to create a curved line between the two marks. It doesn't have to be perfect.
Turn the skirt over with the backside facing upward. Place a mark where you want the lowest part of the skirt to be- right in the middle (towards the bottom.)
On the right side, you will sort of turn the side of the skirt over to continue the line you made on the other side. Extend the mark over the seam.
Now you will connect the marks on the back side. Draw a curved line but make sure the curve turns into more of a straight line towards the bottom middle.
Now match up the seams from both sides of the skirt and re-flatten the skirt. This will make one side of the skirt face upward- a seam should be going right down the middle. The front of the skirt is on the right side of the seam and the back of the skirt is on the left side of the seam. You should now see a continuous line across the whole skirt.
Pin the layers together right along the line.
Cut along the line, pull out the pins and try out your new skirt!
This is my finished skirt.
And a view from the side. If you want your skirt to be longer, just change the measurements. Instead of 15", use 13". You can just make it your own.
And you can use the bottom piece as a scarf necklace! I probably won't really wear this but it's a fun idea! Maybe I can fix it up a little in another DIY.
