*DISCLAIMER- I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL COSMETOLOGIST/HAIRDRESSER/COLORIST. THIS WAS JUST AN EXPERIMENT GONE RIGHT.*
So if you saw our Candy Hair Color post, you know that Casey and I are pretty obsessed with fun-colored-hair right now. It's not a reasonable obsession but hey, are any obsessions really that reasonable? I decided to take matters into my own hands and give my hair some change. By the way, I really don't recommend trying this at home! It's sort of a miracle that my hair turned out the way it did without ruining my hair. I really don't know what I was thinking but my hair still feels like it usually does, it's just pink in some areas now. Anyways, I'm posting to show you how I did my hair just in case you get brave (or crazy) one day!
This is the stuff I used. It cost about $10 for the lightening stuff and the color. It all came in the same box. This already sounds a little shady... only $10?? The cool thing about this specific box kit is that you don't actually have to lighten your hair first. You could just use the color and it would color your hair pink, it just won't stay in very long at all. My friends and I used this box kit years ago to put red in our hair and in the end the red look like the same color on everyone's hair- dark brown, light brown, and blonde. I wanted to try to lighten my hair so that the color would be more permanent. SCARY.
I separated the piece I wanted to lighten first and then I worked my way around my head. I put the bleach about 2/3 of the way up my hair. You could just use a clip but I was trying to be super precise. This is bleach we are talking about.
I put the bleach in lines that started at different places so it wasn't a straight line across my hair. Then I rubbed the bleach into my hair (with gloves on my hands.) Fold the sides of the foil inward and then fold the bottom upwards to keep the foil in place. I didn't buy special foils, I just made my own. I, and Casey too, literally took sheets of aluminum foil and cut them into rectangles. Let your hair process according to the instructions. I left the bleach on my hair for about 45 minutes and got scared so I washed it out. The color I ended up with was a little darker than I imagined but I didn't want my hair to start falling off. In the end it doesn't even matter... it got as pink, or even more pink, than I imagined it would.
After I washed my hair out I dried it completely and started adding the color. I basically did the same thing here that I did to bleach my hair. Add color, make sure it isn't a perfect line and fold up the foil around it.
Repeat until you've done all of your hair. I added the pink color 2/3 of the way up the blonde part (where I just bleached.) You could just color your tips if you wanted. I left it on for 35 minutes which is what the instructions said to do. Well... if you wanted the color to stay in longer than a week or two. Then I washed it and THEN. I. HAD. PINK. HAIR.
This is probably my favorite picture of the new pink hair. I love what it does when I braid it. YAY! Pink hair.

UPDATE
My hair is still pink as of July 12, 2012, but it has faded A LOT. It is a very light pink now.
Wow! i love it. Fair play to you for trying yourself, it looks amazing!!
ReplyDeletelooks awesome!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE dip dyed hair. I wish I could do it to mine...but looking for a real job is probably not done best with the turquoise hair that I want!

it looks gorgeous! It would have costed you a lot if you went to a hair dresser.
ReplyDeletegawd!! it is so gorgeous in braid!!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! Makes me want to mix it up a bit. Love the braid
ReplyDeleteI love it, it's so bright & fun for summer :)
ReplyDeleteThat looks absolutly awesome!!!!! It think you should color your hole head! Or maybe start with a purple which goes into a pink....looks awesome.
ReplyDeleteSo cool! I love this, you look amazing with pink tips!

Wow...looks great!! You did an awesome job!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I wish I had the guts to do it to my own hair!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, wish I didn't have a job where bright hair colors are frowned upon...love this look on you
ReplyDeleteJww
Looks GORGEOUS! I wish I still had long hair to do this.
ReplyDeleteYay pink hair. this gives me a little bit more nerve to try the purple. The braid especially looks awesome.
ReplyDeleteYou are brave! But it looks AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteI love it!!! I've been wanting to do something like this with my hair. I want it to look like flames from a fire. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteSplat has a red hair dye, you should try that.
DeleteIt looks amazing! I would never have the balls to do something like that. I have natural red hair and when I was younger, my mom scared it into me that things could go terribly wrong with my hair if I tried anything funky more than 10 years later, I can never really pull the trigger on drastic hair colors. But this is so pretty on you, I love the fading from where the pink didn't reach the bleached areas.

It looks pretty! Splat is quite a bleeder!
ReplyDeleteoOo it looks so nice in the braid!!
ReplyDeletei wish i could get my hair to take those vibrant colors but it's sooo black and i'm afraid to bleach it:/
It looks amazing!!!

I tried to dye my hair black with pink strips using that RAW dye from hot topic... needless to say, it didn't work at all. It all washed right back out. My hair is too healthy for any color to seep in :l Good for my hair I guess, bad when I want a change of color!
ReplyDeletejust bleach a hidden part of your hair and test it. Mine too is really stubborn when it comes to coloring, I know most packages say only leave on for 30 mins, I have always left on the dye for an hour...when I did a redye of pink I actually left this last one on for 90 mins (not on purpose, i just got sidetracked) and I will tell you I love color and my hair is still as soft as it should be.
DeleteOH how I love it!!!
ReplyDeleteK, I wanted this to be my hair, but I've never done anything more to my hair than cut it. So I put on my big girl panties and gave it a try. The only thing that made me sad is that mine didn't turn out as striking due to my underuse of product. I just didn't know how much to use and I thought I was being thorough but mine turned out splotchy. Don't get me wrong, it's still fun but next time I will go HEAVY on the bleach and dye. Thanks for the tutorial. It really pushed me to step out of my box. :) To see how mine turned out visit us at withallthingsfabulous.blogspot.com.
ReplyDeleteYay! Glad you tried this, even if it didn't turn out perfect.
DeleteIt look awesome! I really want to try this myself but I have dark black hair and I don't know if I'll get a bright color. I'm worried it wont be as pink as I want it to be. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteNo clue. We don't have experience with dyeing black hair. Sorry we couldn't be of more help.
Deletebleach it. i done my black hair with red streaks it works just as good. when you put the foil in for the bleach use a hair dryer works even better.
DeleteThat looks so cool!!
ReplyDeleteThe Rich Style
That is awesome!
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing on you!! I am trying this tonight!! I have dark hair though... So we'll see how it turns out. Thanks for the inspiration!!! :)
ReplyDeleteWill it leave a faint pink color in your hair? I'm really nervous to do it in mine, because i don't want a faint pink for the rest of my life.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, we have no idea. I guess we'll see, but it definitely wont be for the rest of your life. Eventually it would get cut off bit by bit.
DeleteIf I didn't have an office job in a professional setting I would totally do this. Alas, it's kind of frowned upon in the financial sector. :(
ReplyDeleteLooks awesome thinking bout dip dying my hair
ReplyDeleteLove it so much! Re-posted from Pinterest Girlfriends Are Like Shoes

Im doing this to my hair after graduation :)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the way it came out! I have been adding pink to my hair in different ways for about four years now. I haven't ever done anything quite so bold because my school won't allow it.
ReplyDeletePlease keep us updated on how the dye and color lasts in your hair! Pink can be difficult to maintain and I'm always looking for a good brand.
At first I thought wtf..but now it kinda grows on me a little bit each time..so i'm kind of thinking i want pink hair now:p But i would never have the guts to do it.. All creds to you, it looks awesome:)
ReplyDeletei just dip dyed my hair, yesterday, and found this post today. wish i had seen it. i'm a bit of a planner. anyway, i used the teal and violet splat colors and then made a third by mixing them together. the darkest color (the mix) is by far my favorite! great job with your hair!
ReplyDeleteThis post is awesome. Thank you so much for posting! Your hair not only looks great, but I had the confidence to do it myself and it turned out great!
ReplyDeleteI bought that exact color last summer....still haven't done it because I wasn't sure what color of pink it would be...I LOVE it in your hair! Maybe it is time for some summertime fun!
ReplyDeleteWow! Is it really that neon?! I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteYes it was really that neon. There was no photoshopping. It has faded A LOT and it a pale pink now.
DeleteAwesome! I love the pale pink too. I'm gonna have to check that out.
DeleteLove Love Love it, you did such a professional looking job too! I dye hair extensions like this (clip ins and the like) but it looks awesome in your hair ;) Inspiring me to do some pink ones for myself next time.
ReplyDeletewhat color are your extensions ? mine area no 4 so im not sure if it will work :(
DeleteI wonder if I could use this same technique to do a kind of ombre hair dye to my hair? What do you think?
ReplyDeleteI guess so. It's the same idea but instead of pink you'd just have a lighter version of your hair color at the bottom.
Deletethats so pretty but i doubt id ever be allowed to get pink so im going to try blonde. do you think thats pretty too? i have light brownish hair. and im trying to get a different hair look because my hair looks so blah!
ReplyDeleteI've been experimenting with my hair lately and so this is a great tutorial! Thanks!
ReplyDeletehow long dose it last?
ReplyDeleteI've used red splat for the past few years and it usually lasts me about two or three weeks before I want to retouch it. But I only wash my hair 2/3 times a week.
DeleteThat is beautiful. I love it
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I have been using Splat for about two years with no problems as long as you dont bleach too often. Love the "dipped" look, much less maintenance than the way I do mine now.
ReplyDeleteDoing my hair sort of like this, this weekend. I was going to get it done in a salon, but its much too expensive for my wallet ($175). I hope it turns out well!
ReplyDeleteI really want to do this look but I want my pink to be a little darker and not so bright, so do you think I should still use the bleach? Also does the longer you leave it on the darker it gets??? Please and thank you!
ReplyDeleteI have no idea. This was my first and only time doing this. I just followed the instructions on the back of the box and this is how it turned out. However, it has faded drastically. It's super light pink now.
DeleteOk thanks anyway though :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the thanks :) I do wish I had more info b/c A LOT of people ask similar questions and we just don't know.
DeleteThe longer you leave the bleach on the more vibrant and bright the color will be. And splat does work on black hair you just have to leave the bleach on for longer so to keep it healthy do not do this all over by yourself! Go to a professional for all over color & if you're doing just the tips or sections then after you have bleached it and put the color on get your hair trimmed or trim your hair yourself...
ReplyDeleteHow long will this last for? And will it wash out or will the hair have to be bleached and then dyed back to the normal color?
ReplyDeleteLove it! I'll try it.. but i'm sure it wont look as good.
ReplyDeletelooks amazingly awesome!! i love it!
ReplyDeleteTypically all they are allowed to sell over the counter is 20vol developer + a lightening powder. So chances are you wont fry your hair unless you leave it on for hours. 20 vol gives you 2 level of lift plus some extra for the powder. if wanting to color over it just imagine your grade school color wheel and go directly opposite the tone you have on your hair + a neutral mix equal amounts. Remember its just color it all can be fixed so have fun!!!!! ( its really not that scary)
ReplyDeleteAhh, you totally inspired me and I just dip-dyed my hair hot pink (with the same hair dye kit)! It looks awesome. And seeing the way yours faded, I think it'll look good even when it does start to wash out. See how mine looks: RubyBows | Pink Dip Dyed Hair!
ReplyDeleteThis inspired me to do mine! I just got the Splat in the deep blue and in the morning we're going to see how it turns out!!!!
ReplyDeleteAdorei!!! e o resultado ficou lindo!! maravilhoso!
ReplyDeleteI've had pink streaks in my hair for a while, I really like Special Effects' Atomic Pink. I reapply my color every 3-4 weeks and it stays nice and bright and feels totally reconditioned (it does rub off on my pillow and I'm afraid to wear a white top until the second wash, but I can live with that).
ReplyDeleteHOORAY FOR PINK HAIR!!!
I love it! It's oh so fabulous(: Guess who's trying it next? This girl!(:
ReplyDeletethe color is fantastic!
ReplyDeletehttp://heidiswanderings.blogspot.com/
wooooow
ReplyDeletethat really great job and looks so cute ^__^
It's quite daring to wear a white top while dyeing your hair pink :) But the outcome is amazing! You inspired me a lot, thank you!
ReplyDeleteDef great tips!!! I gotta get extensions also for this....ur at home tips just saved me $200 at the salon!
ReplyDeleteAMAZING!!, where did you buy the color?
ReplyDeleteDid this over the weekend, it turned out awesome!! I purchased the Splat dye from Ulta (but they also carry it at Walmart).

ReplyDeleteYou did a wonderful job. I have seen this product in my lical store before and always wondered what the results would be.
ReplyDeleteHow long does this last? A month or two?
ReplyDeleteIt lasted much longer than that. It has just faded over time. You can look through our blog and see pics of Savannah's hair to see how it faded over time.
DeleteHi Girls, I came across your blog because of this post when I was googling for dip dyed hair. I've been back reading and love your blog. I've bookmarked it and plan to visit regularly. Nice work! =)
ReplyDeleteYour hairs are looking so beautiful I must say and you have nicely explained the way you have done dip dye your hairs, I like it.
ReplyDeletehair color ideas for long hair

ReplyDeleteI'm trying this tutorial tonight. I'm scared :( BTW your hair looks beautiful, I hope mine turns out similar.
ReplyDeleteI have jet black hair (natural) and I want to dye it dark red looking as if I have flames on my hair. The problem is I am such a chicken I don't have the guts to do this. Maybe when I'm 19.
ReplyDeleteThanks to share these details it’s truly nice.
